What Is Laser-Assisted Periodontal Therapy?
Gum disease treatment has traditionally relied on cutting away infected tissue and suturing the gums back in place.
Laser-assisted periodontal therapy works differently. Our dentist guides a dental laser into the infected pocket around the tooth to target bacteria and diseased tissue, while minimizing disruption to surrounding healthy tissue. The pigmented, diseased tissue absorbs the laser energy preferentially over the healthy tissue.
Different laser types serve different purposes in periodontal care. Diode lasers are commonly used for bacterial reduction and soft tissue work, while erbium lasers are better suited for root surface debridement.
LAPT complements scaling and root planing rather than replacing it. Some clinical studies show that adding laser therapy can lead to short-term improvements in probing depth when used alongside scaling and root planing. However, the American Academy of Periodontology notes there is insufficient evidence that any laser offers a clear advantage over conventional scaling and root planing.
Dr. Sarkar will discuss whether adjunctive laser therapy is appropriate for your specific case.
Benefits of Laser-Assisted Periodontal Therapy
One benefit of laser gum treatment is how selectively it works. Laser energy is absorbed more readily by pigmented bacteria and diseased tissue in the pocket, which can help limit disruption to surrounding healthy gum tissue.
Minimizing trauma to healthy tissue generally leads to less post-treatment soreness and allows many patients to return to normal activity more quickly.
Laser therapy can also help reduce bacterial counts in the pocket at the time of treatment. Dr. Sarkar can walk you through what to realistically expect based on your case during your evaluation.
Who Is a Candidate for Laser-Assisted Periodontal Therapy?
Laser-assisted gum therapy offered at our clinic in Fort Worth is appropriate for a range of patients, from those with early gum disease to those managing more advanced periodontitis. Candidacy is confirmed through a comprehensive periodontal evaluation.
Patients who are commonly good candidates include:
- Those with gingivitis or early-stage gum disease that has not responded fully to routine cleaning
- Patients with moderate to severe periodontitis and deep periodontal pockets
- Patients seeking a less invasive alternative to conventional surgical treatment
- Patients managing gum disease as part of a broader restorative or cosmetic treatment plan
What to Expect During the Laser-Assisted Periodontal Therapy Process
Before any treatment begins, Dr. Sarkar takes a close look at what’s actually going on below the gumline. That means measuring pocket depths at each tooth and going through your imaging in detail. At our clinic, the imaging includes CBCT 3D scans and AI-assisted X-ray analysis that supports Dr. Sarkar’s diagnosis, so the picture of your bone levels and disease extent is far more complete than what a standard X-ray shows.
With a clear treatment plan in place, the laser is guided into the periodontal pocket to target the bacteria and infected tissue driving the disease. Getting the pocket clean at this stage makes everything that follows more effective.
After the laser pass, Dr. Sarkar cleans the root surfaces using ultrasonic scalers and hand instruments to remove built-up calculus and bacterial deposits from below the gumline. Once the roots are clean, the laser may be used again to finish decontaminating the area.
Some mild soreness in the days after treatment is normal and passes quickly. Dr. Sarkar goes over what to eat and how to care for the treated areas while things heal. From there, follow-up visits are scheduled to check how the tissue is responding and whether pocket depths are improving over time.
